A diagram can contain everything an audience needs and still leave people wondering where to begin. The relevant detail may be visible, accurately labeled, and large enough to read. It simply competes with several other equally plausible places to look.
Adding one arrow changes the invitation. It tells viewers that a particular location deserves attention now. In a presentation, that can help align the audience’s eyes with the speaker’s explanation. On a tutorial page, it can distinguish the control being discussed from nearby controls that look similar.
An arrow is useful because it gives direction, but direction is only part of communication. The symbol should help people find the evidence or follow a relationship. It cannot explain the meaning by itself, and an inaccurate arrow can make a clear image misleading.
Direction helps viewers choose a starting point
Imagine a hypothetical training slide showing a settings panel with several switches. The presenter says, “Change the notification option.” If the labels are unfamiliar, listeners have to search while also following the explanation. An arrow aimed at the relevant switch reduces uncertainty about the referent: this is the control the speaker means.
The cue is especially useful when the target is small or visually similar to nearby items. It is less useful when the target already fills the slide. An enormous arrow pointing to the only object on the screen adds emphasis without solving a location problem.
Before adding a cue, ask what the viewer might reasonably mistake for the target. That question helps you decide whether an arrow, a short label, a crop, or a simpler layout would provide the clearest guidance.
Research on attention explains part of the effect
Laboratory studies have found that arrow cues can orient spatial attention. For example, Ristic and Kingstone’s study Attention to Arrows: Pointing to a New Direction examined how predictive arrows influenced attention relative to other cues. The findings show that arrow direction can matter even beyond a person’s deliberate reading of a diagram.
That evidence does not mean an arrow guarantees that every viewer will look at the same place first. A laboratory attention task differs from listening to a talk, examining a slide, or learning a new procedure. Other features, including size, movement, contrast, prior knowledge, and the viewer’s purpose, also matter.
The practical inference is modest: an arrow is a potentially strong directional cue, so place it deliberately. Do not use it as decoration and assume the audience will ignore its direction.
Decide whether the arrow means “look here” or “this leads to that”
Arrows perform several jobs. In an annotated screenshot, an arrow often points to a location. In a process diagram, it may indicate the next step. In a map, it may show movement. Between two concepts, it can imply influence or causation. Confusion appears when the slide uses the same visual form for different meanings without explanation.
Suppose an arrow connects “New training” to “Higher output.” Viewers may reasonably read it as a causal claim. If the data merely show that both occurred during the same period, the diagram overstates the evidence. A title or spoken caveat may not fully undo the visual implication.
Label the relationship when it could be misunderstood. “Next step,” “supplies,” “is compared with,” and “may influence” are different claims. Choose the label that matches the explanation, and consider a line without an arrowhead when direction is not part of the relationship.
Make the endpoint precise
The tip is the most important part of a pointing arrow. If it lands between two buttons, overlaps a label, or stops far from the intended object, the cue creates another interpretation problem. The audience now has to work out what the arrow itself means.
In a chart, distinguish between pointing to a particular data point, a broad region, and an overall trend. A single point may need an arrow and a concise annotation. A region may be better shown with a bracket or subtle highlight. A trend may be clearer with an explanatory headline and direct labels.
Do not cover the evidence with the cue. Leave enough space for the target to remain visible, and check that the arrow does not hide a minus sign, boundary, or small but important detail.
Use contrast to make the cue legible without making it dominant
An arrow should be visible against its immediate background. A pale line on a bright photograph may disappear, while a heavy fluorescent arrow can overwhelm a delicate diagram. Choose a thickness and color that work at the actual viewing size.
Color alone should not carry the instruction. “Follow the green arrow” becomes difficult when the color is hard to distinguish or the material is printed differently. Add a label or describe the endpoint in words. The direction and placement should remain useful even when the color contributes little.
Check the image on a smaller screen. An arrow that looks restrained in the editor can become a large obstruction in a narrow layout, and a fine arrowhead can disappear during projection or video compression.
Too many arrows create a new search task
When every part of a slide has its own arrow, no single arrow tells the audience where to begin. Viewers have to choose among the cues before they can follow them. Crossing lines and inconsistent arrowheads make that task harder.
Start by identifying the relationship being explained at this moment. Keep the cue for that relationship prominent. If several paths must remain visible, organize them into a stable layout and use direct labels to distinguish their roles. Some diagrams genuinely require many connections, but their structure should do most of the work.

Time the cue to the explanation
During a live demonstration, point when you name the target. If the arrow appears after you have moved on, viewers may look back at the wrong moment. If it remains highlighted throughout several unrelated points, they may assume that the old target is still central.
A stable arrow is usually easier to follow than a cursor circling continuously. Move to the relevant location, stop, explain, and then move only when the subject changes. If a pointer cannot be seen clearly in the recording, use a prepared annotation instead.
For a document that people read independently, the timing must come from layout and language. Place the explanation near the annotated image and describe what the reader should notice. There is no speaker present to correct an ambiguous cue.
Test whether the arrow improves the actual task
Show the slide to someone unfamiliar with it and ask them to identify the feature you are discussing. Then ask what the feature means. The first question checks location; the second checks interpretation. Success on one does not establish success on the other.

A well-placed arrow gives the audience a dependable place to look. Its value comes from the connection between that location and the idea you are explaining. Once that connection is clear, the arrow has done its job.
